WATCH D.O.G.S

September 2, 2008 · 27 Comments

Dear WATCH D.O.G.S.

On behalf of the school and staff I want to thank you for investing in our students.  The WATCH D.O.G.S program has many benefits to the school, providing an extra layer of security and support, but how did you benefit from the experience?  What would you tell the next guy coming to school about your day at Branson Elementary West?

Thanks again for your leadership and service.

Mr. Dawson

It was good to see the things that the kids are involved in. Thanks for having me.

My day as a Watch D.O.G. was fantastic…

From the night of the pizza kick-off event, my son had been very excited about me signing up to be a Watch D.O.G., and on that morning he was pumped up that my day had come.

At first, I thought I was volunteering to help the kids, which I was, but I soon found out that the kids at Branson Elementary West were giving back to me, too. Even though to many of them I was a complete stranger, they were all so excited to see me. Whether we were reading about Goldie Locks having chicken pox or a giant unicorn made of cheese, playing basketball at recess, talking in the cafeteria, writing a story about a polar bear or a hyena, or simply passing in the hallway – everywhere I went, the kids treated me like a hero.

Additionally, the faculty and staff seems genuinely thankful to be receiving what little help I could provide – nothing but smiles and kind words.

But the story below highlights the most rewarding part of my day…

After lunch, I was met at the edge of the playground by a girl who had been in my son’s kindergarten class. “Mr. Miller, Boy #1 and Boy #2 are going to fight this recess.” I asked her to take me to the boys. After I got the boys together, a teacher pulled them aside, and I thought that was the end of it, but it wasn’t…

Later in the day, I walked into the gym to help Coach Hart with his PE class, and there was Boy #1. After we had played a spirited game of kickball, and the kids were lining up to leave, I was able to pull Boy #1 aside and talk to him for just a second. As he left the gym, he promised me that he wouldn’t fight on the playground anymore.

Whether he ever does or not, at least for that moment, I made a positive difference in that little boy’s life.

Mr. Dawson, thanks for having me, and if you can ever figure out a way to pay me, I would be a Watch D.O.G. every day!

I had a great time. The schedule of events helped me feel like I knew what I was supposed to be doing. All the teachers were very helpful and I could tell that they had talked about the program because the students were all very respectful.

I enjoyed seeing my own child during his school day. Meeting all of his instructors was a bonus.

I had great expierence in just watching the cooperation in all the students. In art other kids were helping other kids with diffucult task. At recess watched kids with challenges being generously cared for by other students. I enjoyed talking with many of the paras and staff.

It is another amazing year. This watchdog program is the most awesom thing that has happened to this school district in a long time. This year’s turn out for this program was incredible. Lets keep it going!!

I had a great time interacting with the children. They love having someone to talk to. It was enjoyable watching them in their special classes and on recess.

  •   Handy Haydon // Oct 8th 2008 at 2:46 pm

The program is exceptional. Well thought and well scheduled. By far the best part is the opportunity to work with, and get to connect with the kids in lots of different settings..the classroom, one on one, in the hall, on the playground, at lunch. A special thanks to the teachers and staff for their consideration and letting me be a part of their day. My contribution today? Not so sure. My take away…Who these kids are and what they will become bodes well for our future, and theirs as well. Thanks for letting me be a part of this.

  •   Handy Haydon // Oct 9th 2008 at 10:03 am

If I was the one to be serving the kids yesterday, someone forgot to tell the kids and staff. It was me who was being served. I kept turning around to see if there was someone else they were smiling at and talking to!

Starting with the ‘hello’ upon entering the school it continued all day…in the classroom, with a group, one on one, in the hall, at lunch, at recess…I was greeted and honored. It was genuine, it was in the kids faces and actions and fully supported by the staff.

Thank you for the chance to be part of sharing the day with you. Great Kids and Staff. You will see my WatchDOG-ging again. How could I not?

WatchDOGS is a great program and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Even though I have done it before, I am amazed at the new things I learn each time I do it. I wish every male role model would take at least one day so they too could experience what it feels like to make a difference in the school.

  •   JEFF KEEN // Nov 6th 2008 at 11:31 am

What a great way to be more involved with your child and to observe and help, for a brief time, with other great kids in the community.

    Mr. Dawson,
We have Watch DOGS here at Hillcrest in Lebanon as well. I am going to put this website out there for my Watch DOGS to visit as well. It is great to hear such positive feedback.

    Way to go Watch DOGS!

  •   Todd Bradshaw // Nov 7th 2008 at 2:38 pm

I had such a positive experience being a watchdog. I really didn’t know what to expect, but it was very rewarding seeing how it affected the kids to have a watchdog around. I would definitely encourage other fathers to get involved.

  •   Josh Lashley // Nov 10th 2008 at 12:27 pm

I agree that this is a good program and one that definately helps with parent involvment and security at the school. Being a recently new father, I can see how this would be a win-win situation for all who are involved.

  •   Lucas Banks // Nov 11th 2008 at 2:44 pm

This is my second time to be a Watch Dog. I have enjoyed it on both occasions and look forward to the next of many times as a Watch Dog. I hope the kids have as much fun as I do. I really think that male role models are important to the kids who are used to mostly mothers being involved with school functions. Dads, get in their and participate also!

  •   Donald Williams // Nov 11th 2008 at 4:01 pm

This is absolutely the best program for gertting fathers and or father figures involved in school. The children are at times somewhat awestruck just to have the male role model in their prescence. The look on their faces is worth every minute.

Every man aith children in school should experience being able to help not only their own but all the other children they come in contact with.

One of the highlights of my time was to be walking down the hall and from all directions hearing “Hey Watchdog” or “Good morning Watchdog” not from the teachers but from the students.

  •   Jim Braatz // Nov 14th 2008 at 2:49 pm

It was a great day. My son was very excited this morning that today I was going to be the “Watch Dog”. Everywhere I went I heard Hi Watchdog. I think that the kids really enjoy seeing parents taking an active role in their school. The teachers were very supportative as well and always thanked me for my time.

I really enjoyed my day and the time with the students and look forward to being able to participating in the program again.

Thanks for supporting the Watch Dog Program!!!!

Great day today. It was interesting having second graders here this year. They are a lot of fun. It was great getting involved in art and recess today and one on one reading time seemed to be appreciated.

  •   Robb Horton // Nov 19th 2008 at 3:37 pm

    Mr. Dawson and Staff
The watch dog program is such a great experience,,, Not only does the school have another set of eyes and ears but the man on duty that day gets an up close and person look at what a great school we have….Thanks for having me….

This really is a wonderful experience. Not knowing what to expect, there is a little apprehension at first, but that vanishes almost as quickly. It is wonderful to be welcomed so quickly by the staff when arriving here. Perhaps the greatest joy comes in the realization that you really do make a difference to the children. As I listened to the children talk, they are excited and so receptive to the whole idea of the Watch Dogs. I am very blessed to have the opportunity to have spent the day here, and it is an extra special time to be able to see just how much this meant to my own daughter. (After all, she did tell all her friends:))

Thank you so much. I look forward to having the time to visit again. Woof! Woof!

    Respectfully,
    Gregg Busch

    Great Program!
In a world of declining role models this opportunity for Dads is huge! The significance of modeling positive roles for kids cannot be ignored. I suspect that kids may learn more about their dad in this setting. It only takes that one moment to connect and bond. Watch dogs is vital to the community and to the development of well grounded citizens.
    I Shall Return.

my day as a watchdog was fantastic from start to finish. i appreciated that my day was planned and explained to relieve any confusion or anxiety. I was extremely impressed by the time and enthusiasm of the teachers and staff to make me feel at home and useful. Most importantly, i was surprised by the response from the children. Throughout the entire day and in different classrooms, the kids seemed to really enjoy having a dad there and involved. The smiles and comments i received from kids i had never met before made this day mean more to me than i think it did for the kids.

Thank you for taking the time and attention necessary to run this program. i will certainly do it more often and recommend it to other dads.

  •   MARTIN WHITED // Dec 16th 2008 at 3:39 pm

I really appreciate the professionalism of the staff and faculty. The students seemed respectful of authority and excited about me being there. I like being a watchdog because I can see in person what is happening in our local education. I would highly recommend participating in this program.

  •   Chad Ray // Jan 21st 2009 at 3:38 pm

This was a great experience that I would highly recommend. Your kids will love having you at school with them, and you can be a great role model for all the students and dads.

  •   John Akers // Feb 27th 2009 at 2:38 pm

My son asked 50 times this week what day I was going to be a watchdog. He was very excited every time I interacted with his class, which was often. I recommend this program for any Dad who wants to share in his child’s experiences at school and learn more about his or her daily routine. The staff makes it easy for you.
